We have all been there; a major essay or an upcoming exam that is both stressful and time-consuming.

While it is important to be diligent in your assessment/evaluation preparations, it is equally, if not more important, to also take study breaks!

Did you know that taking study breaks can aid in retaining information and ease stress?

You may be questioning how study breaks can be beneficial as you are spending less time focusing on the task at hand. However, research has shown that taking breaks of 5 minutes to one hour in length can help.

Study Breaks

  • Provide you with some well-needed rest.
  • Improve your focus and productivity.
  • Refresh your brain, and can provide a new perspective to your task.

When taking your study break:

  • Avoid scrolling through social media.

Instead, try out a few of the suggestions below during your next study session and experience firsthand how study breaks can help you study smarter not harder!

Study Break Suggestions

  • Don’t take your study break at your workspace. Go outside, get some fresh air, take a 15 – 20-minute walk.
  • Catch up on some much-needed sleep by taking a power nap.
  • Meditate for 20 – 30 minutes. This is a great way to clear your mind of all the stress that comes with major assignments, and will help you feel focused, and refreshed when you return to your desk.
  • Take some time to wind down by cooking something for yourself. Whether it be a meal or a snack, taking a quick meal break will fill you up with some fuel and have you energized and ready to start studying again!
  • Call a friend! This is a great way to take your mind off of your studying while allowing you to chat and have some laughs!

5-Minute Study Breaks

  • Stretch. After sitting in one spot for hours, your body is likely to tense. Stretch your neck, arms, and wrists before returning to your studying.
  • Complete some deep-breathing exercises to calm your nerves.
  • Listen to some of your favourite tunes and just let it out! Have a 5-minute dance party, do some jumping jacks, eat a snack, or laugh with a friend!
