Preparing Your Child for The Upcoming School Year
The first week back to school can be a difficult transition for many students.
Below are some important things that you can try out right at home to help your child settle into the new school year!
Implement a routine.
During the summer months, it is inevitable that the routines and schedules developed during the school year are no longer in practice.
Ease back into the school year routine by slowly reducing overall screen time, and promoting daily physical activity. Rushing right back into routines may overwhelm your child and make it more difficult to follow the routine overall.
Facilitate healthy dialogue about school.
If your child does not want to discuss school or academics during the first couple of weeks, don’t worry, this is very common!
These discussions can be regarding how your child is feeling about being back in school. A possible question could be; is there anything different you would like to try after school? Have discussions about strategies that worked well in the previous year and those that did not.
Assess if your child has experienced any summer learning loss.
As students tend to take a break from academics during the summer months, summer learning loss is common.
If your child seems to need a review of certain topics and prerequisite skills for the new school year, now would be a great time to designate some time for review in their daily routines.
If you are having trouble encouraging your child to review school materials, educational games are great learning tool that is sure to make your child enthusiastic about the topic
